Karen Smith, M.D., M.P.H. is an Infectious Disease physician currently serving as the Public Health Officer for Napa County, California.  Prior to moving to Napa in 2004, Dr. Smith was the Tuberculosis Control Officer and Deputy Health Officer in Santa Clara County for eight years and served as Medical Officer III at the California State Tuberculosis Control Branch for one year. 

 

Dr. Smith completed her medical training and infectious diseases fellowship at Stanford University after having obtained a Master of Public Health degree in International Health at Johns Hopkins University.  Prior to her medical training Dr. Smith worked in outbreak control in Morocco and Thailand and did Public Health work in Peru and Nepal. 

 

Dr. Smith currently teaches for the Francis J. Curry National TB Center in San Francisco and the Center for Infectious Diseases Preparedness at the University of California at Berkeley.  She also serves as Chair of the National Association of County and City Health Officials Public Health Emergency Preparedness Committee and has given web-based training sessions, hosted by the U.S. State Department, for groups of local public health officials around the world on avian and pandemic influenza.
